Welcome! I'm Udon, a nerd who loves BL, anime, games, and udon soup. I mostly make BL (slash) fan art, but sometimes dabble in fanfiction and other writing. This journal serves as an archive for my diary and blog posts, which I plan to eventually crosspost to Neocities. After that, it will serve as a mirror to my Neocities website.

[Read on Tumblr]

I was writing a post on the personal pronouns used by characters in Trigun, but the section on Wolfwood started getting too long because I couldn't help adding fun facts about his dialect, so I decided to separate that into its own post!

(Disclaimer: this is not a linguistics post—I'm just putting together fun facts I’ve learned from reading interviews, articles, and talking with other fans and Japanese speakers. I’m not a native speaker, much less an expert on Kansai-ben, so please take everything with a grain of salt.)

Since I've seen a few people talking about this subject (including @cerealandchoccymilk who made very good points), I thought I'd share my own two cents on how the (western side of the) Trigun fandom treats Wolfwood's race/ethnicity.

This is mostly copied from a 2am rant on my friends' discord server and cleaned up a bit, so apologies if it's a bit disjointed. Full post under the readmore.

The way the English-speaking Trigun fandom treats Wolfwood is... a bit weird.

He doesn’t have a canon ethnicity, and unlike Rem, Nightow hasn't given his extra-textual personal opinion on the subject. His appearance was modeled off a Japanese man — Tortoise Matsumoto, the lead singer of the band Ulfuls (ウルフルズ), which is also where the name Wolfwood (ウルフウッド) comes from. Fun fact!

Photo of Tortoise Matsumoto, a Japanese man with light tan skin, prominent sideburns, and aquiline nose.
Three images side by side. Left: Tortoise Matsumoto. Center: a panel of Wolfwood's face in the Trigun manga. Right: Wolfwood in the 1998 Trigun anime.
He really is a handsome fellow, isn't he?

Because of Wolfwood's tan skin and the childhood nickname Nico*, many fans in the West take it for granted that he is of some sort of unspecified Latino, mestizo origin. I would say it's almost reached the level of fanon at this point.

This is the masterpost/brainstorming document for my Trigun Figure Skating AU!
Last updated: 2025.02.01

It's a tradition of mine by this point to create a figure skating AU for every fandom I join. Trigun is no exception. This AU is the brainchild of myself and Lia, with help and input from our friends, and is by far the most detailed and involved of the FS AUs I've worked on. It's not directly based on any figure skating media, but heavily inspired by some of my favorite athletes and stories from real-life competitive figure skating.

Present day of this narrative is the 2017/2018 season, leading up to the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.

Quick cast rundown:
  • Vash Saverem - USA - retired (formerly ladies' singles*)
  • Nai Saverem - USA - men’s singles (formerly ladies' singles)
  • Meryl Stryfe - Canada - ladies’ singles
  • Milly Thompson - Canada - ladies' singles
  • Nikolai Volkov (Wolfwood) - Kazakhstan (training in Russia) - men’s singles
  • Elendira Krasnova - Germany - pairs
  • Livio Feng - Russian skating for Germany - pairs
  • Legato Bluesummers - Spain (training in USA) - men’s singles
* Note: until the 2021/2022 season, the women's singles discipline was referred to as "ladies' singles". Yes, this is a very archaic and sexist sport.

Art:
Vash wearing figure skates, smiling and waving with his right hand, empty left sleeve tucked into his pocket. Knives wearing an athletic bodysuit and figure skates, holding a bottle of coconut water.
Vash and Nai Saverem.
Skater Wolfwood gets a pep talk from Vash, his coach, at the edge of an ice rink. Wolfwood performs his figure skating program.
Niko and coach Vash for the Working WV event on X/Twitter.

External links:In addition to fan art, the story of this AU is going to be presented in the form of character profiles formatted in the exact same style as real-life International Skating Union (ISU) skater bios. Because I’m crazy.

Example of what these bios look like: Michelle Kwan (Women's singles, last updated 2007), Denis Ten (Men's singles, last updated 2018), Aljona Savchenko/Bruno Massot (Pairs, last updated 2018).
