Wolfwood's Kansai Dialect

I was writing a post on the personal pronouns used by characters in Trigun, but the section on Wolfwood started getting too long because I couldn't help adding fun facts about his dialect, so I decided to separate that into its own post!

(Disclaimer: this is not a linguistics post—I'm just putting together fun facts I’ve learned from reading interviews, articles, and talking with other fans and Japanese speakers. I’m not a native speaker, much less an expert on Kansai-ben, so please take everything with a grain of salt.)

Ship order preference

I think I finally realized/accepted something about my taste in ships.

I’m not that fussy about top/bottom order (the kind of erotica I like the most doesn’t involve penetration, or even any vanilla sex), but I do tend to have preferences. I’m not a 50/50 verse/リバ shipper, but if the art/writing suits my tastes, I will eat it regardless of who tops.

However, it turns out I have very strong Dom/sub preferences if it’s a ship I’m very invested in. I’m not sure why.

It does create a bit of a conundrum because people tend to treat these as interchangeable, but they usually only tag top/bottom. And even if I prefer A/B, I still want to see B/A fanworks! But only if A is still Dom and B is still sub. However most B/A fanworks will be Dom!B and sub!A, so not to my tastes.

Now here is the surprising part. I have pretty much no ship order preference for sadist/masochist. For me it’s completely equal opportunity. I love when A hurts B, I love when B hurts A (as long as it’s still Dom!A and sub!B).

You would think that I’d run into the same issue as with Dom/sub, where people will treat them as interchangeable. But S&M works are not that common in fandom, so I don’t even see it enough to become an issue.

And when I say S&M here, I’m not counting things like light spanking or biting that are popular in vanilla sex (not that there’s anything wrong with them, I just like harder stuff).

I tried to be like the cool kids for many years and say that I’m open to any dynamics in a ship, but I wasn’t being true to myself. The truth is, in many ways, I am that dreaded fudanshi.

Disclaimer: I know that a lot of fandom likes to treat top/bottom preference as a moral issue, but rest assured that just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean I’m judging it or think it’s bad. I just have my own personal tastes.

Because I am. Very stupid. Instead of working on art yesterday I started writing a very long post about sexual violence in Trigun Maximum. For various personal reasons which I will not go into, I’m primed to have a lot of thoughts about this.

(Spoilers: I don’t have unambiguously positive feelings about it, but it’s one of the things that makes the series so dear to me.)

But man. I thought I had grown a really tough skin about the subject over the years (*gestures at various personal reasons*), but after finishing the section on Legato I was so fucking drained.

Now I’m starting to reconsider posting it because idk if I’ll be able to handle a random jackass trying to start fights with me in the notes like it’s happened to my meta posts before. And I think it’s likely to happen if I express strong and unpopular opinions about something as taboo as portrayals of sexual assault in art, especially if said opinions are appreciative instead of negative/angry.

So, in case that post never sees the light of day, I want to link the essay The Art of Rape: Crafting Violation in TV and Film by Sloane Leong, which was a very important read for me about a year ago and congealed a lot of my own thoughts on sexual violence in media. (Obvious content warning for discussions of rape.)

On Wolfwood's ethnicity and the Latino Wolfwood headcanon

Since I've seen a few people talking about this subject (including @cerealandchoccymilk who made very good points), I thought I'd share my own two cents on how the (western side of the) Trigun fandom treats Wolfwood's race/ethnicity.

This is mostly copied from a 2am rant on my friends' discord server and cleaned up a bit, so apologies if it's a bit disjointed. Full post under the readmore.

The way the English-speaking Trigun fandom treats Wolfwood is... a bit weird.

He doesn’t have a canon ethnicity, and unlike Rem, Nightow hasn't given his extra-textual personal opinion on the subject. His appearance was modeled off a Japanese man — Tortoise Matsumoto, the lead singer of the band Ulfuls (ウルフルズ), which is also where the name Wolfwood (ウルフウッド) comes from. Fun fact!

He really is a handsome fellow, isn't he?

Because of Wolfwood's tan skin and the childhood nickname Nico*, many fans in the West take it for granted that he is of some sort of unspecified Latino, mestizo origin. I would say it's almost reached the level of fanon at this point.

Trigun Figure Skating AU brainstorming

It's a tradition of mine by this point to create a figure skating AU for every fandom I join. Trigun is no exception. This AU is the brainchild of myself and Lia, with help and input from our friends, and is by far the most detailed and involved of the FS AUs I've worked on. It's not directly based on any figure skating media, but heavily inspired by some of my favorite athletes and stories from real-life competitive figure skating.

Present day of this narrative is the 2017/2018 season, leading up to the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.
